The Et cetera shop

In March of 1972, Linie Friesen, Selma Loewen, Susan Giesbrecht and Sara Stoesz opened the first MCC Thrift Shop in Altona, Manitoba with an expectation the project might last “three to six months.” The shop began to thrive and produced about $1,000. for MCC during the first six months of operation. More than forty years later, their vision for creative use of local clothing and household surpluses has grown to be a North American network of over 100 shops, producing income for the programs of Mennonite Central Committee – more than 16 million in the 2014/2015 fiscal year.

To think our dream has grown to this ~Selma Loewen

COVID-19 Hours Update

Many of our MCC Thrift shops in the U.S. are open and we anticipate more opening in the weeks and months to come. However due to the global pandemic and the ever-changing protocols across counties and states, many shops have limited hours for both shopping and donating.

Please connect directly with the shop for the latest information.

the store next door

Many hands and hearts worked together to make The Store Next Door, an extension of the Et Cetera Shop, a reality.

“There have been so many hands in this,” General Manager Jaimie McFarlin said. “It just seems like things were opening up.”

The two thrift stores are owned by sponsoring area Mennonite churches. The bulk of the proceeds from both stores are donated to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), which funds relief work, development projects, and education across the globe.

The Store Next Door can showcase higher end, larger items that, due to space, the Et Cetera Shop has not been able to accept.

Yes, we stock our shops nearly every day!

Values

As a network of not-for-profit Thrift Shops, we support the local and global relief, development and peace projects of Mennonite Central Committee.
