‘Yes, yes’ or ‘no, no’Written by admin on Nov 10, 2017 in - No Comments
“Again, you heard that it was said by the ancients, ‘You shall not perjure yourself, but you shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord.’
But I say to you, to not swear (take an oath) at all, either by heaven, because it is (the) throne of God, or by the earth, because it is a footstool of his feet, or by Jerusalem, because it is (the) city of the Great King. And (certainly) don’t swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.
But let what you say be ‘yes, yes’; ‘no, no.’ But the going beyond from these is from the evil one.” Matthew 5:33-37 AT
A humble, simple, and clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’ suffices. Sometimes we aren’t able to do what we promise or set out to do. We are to work, and always tell the truth, as best we can, depending on God’s providence. Everything in creation belongs to God.
Jesus says profuse or unnecessary words that go beyond a transparent, simple ‘yes,’ and ‘no’ are from that which is evil. Such words can be arrogant, or may imply a “double standard for truth” (Richard B. Gardner Matthew BCBC 108).
The Holy Spirit guides our actions and words. God is good to us.
Peace and All Good!
