What we believe
Written by admin on Dec 15, 2011When learning about a new church, it’s good to know what they believe.
Who are the Mennonites? is a page on our site that highlights some of our beliefs, values and practices. Anabaptism 101 outlines the theological tradition Mennonites come from and resonate with. But some people want to see a doctrinal statement. If that’s you, you will be glad to know that you can read Confession of Faith from a Mennonite Perspective here.
This isn’t the first confession of faith Mennonites have embraced, and it likely will not be the last. We believe that the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective serves the church, not the other way around. How do Mennonite confessions of faith serve the church?
One, they provide guidelines for the interpretation of Scripture. At the same time, the confession itself is subject to the authority of the Bible.
Two, confessions of faith provide guidance for belief and practice. A written statement supports, but does not replace, a lived witness of faith.
Three, confessions build a foundation for unity within and among churches.
Four, confessions offer an outline for instructing new church members and for sharing information with seekers.
Five, confessions give an updated interpretation of belief and practice in the midst of changing times.
And, six, confessions help in discussing Mennonite faith and practice with other Christians and people of other faiths.
